He breathed his last on February 4, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 88. The official statement released by the community announced that he passed peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV was a revered spiritual leader and a global philanthropist. His leadership, which began in 1957 after succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan, was marked by his unwavering commitment to social development, education, and economic empowerment.

Succession and the Future of the Ismaili Community

As per the traditions of the Ismaili community, the 49th Imam had already named his successor in his will. The will is set to be read in the presence of his family members and senior community leaders to officially declare his successor.
