Ehsaa’s Nash-o-Numa Program to tackle the stunting growth of Pakistani children

Ehsaa's Nash-o-Numa program, tackling the paralyzed growth problem of 40 percent of Pakistani children, is officially underway on August 13, announced the Prime Minister's Special Assistant for Social Protection and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Sania Nishtar.

At a press conference, she said that Prime Minister Imran Khan will officially join her in launching the Ehsaas Nash-o-Numa program by visiting the Ehsaas Nash-o-Numa Center in the Khyber Tribal District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

She said approximately 40 percent of children in Pakistan have experienced stunts due to malnutrition and other causes. She added the highest incidence of dwarf disease in Pakistan by province and region in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Sindh tribal areas.

Ehsaa's Nash-o-Numa program was created to prevent malnutrition stunts in children under the age of two, pregnant women and nursing mothers. The deserving Nash-o-Numa recipients will receive a quarterly grant, including Rs 2,000 for girls and Rs 1,500 for boys, in addition to providing a healthy bag of food.

She said the program, conducted with the support of the World Food Program, is the result of a year and a half of extensive planning, technical advice and public-private partnerships. In the first phase, a total of 33 development centers will be set up in nine districts of the country, including Khyber, Upper Dir, Bagh, Ghizer, Hunza, Kharmang, Kharan, Badin and Rajanpur.

All 33 development centers in the first phase would be operational by the end of August, she said.

The four Nash-o-Numa centers were located in the Rajanpur district of Punjab province, six in the Upper Dir and three in the Khyber district of | Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be set up, while six centers will be set up in the Badin district of Sindh.

Three Nash-o-Numa centers are being set up in the Kharan district of Balochistan province, three in the Bagh district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and eight in Gilgit-Baltistan.

She pointed out that a number of facilities would become available for women and their children at each Nash-o-Numa center. A separate registration desk has been set up in each center to support deserving women.

The Nash-o-Numa app is designed to track the health of beneficiaries and a dedicated guide has been created to help them.

The deputies at the registration desk register pregnant and breastfeeding women and their newborns in the development app and conduct a detailed study of height, weight and health in women and their children under two years of age.

Provisions have also been made in centers for the vaccination of affected children and women. According to Dr. In Nishtar, female recipients of the Nash-o-Numa program are required to attend awareness-raising events specially organized in regional languages.

Special charts, posters and informational videos about nutrition, hygiene and health have been put together to raise awareness among female recipients, she added.

All Nash-o-Numa centers are installing dedicated ATMs for biometric payments of quarterly grants to female beneficiaries. After receiving healthy grocery packages, women can get the Nash-o-Numa scholarship from the downtown ATM, she added.
