The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has set up an artificial intelligence and data processing center (CENTAIC) to increase the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in warfare, a national newspaper reports.
In an official statement, PAF Chief of Air Force (CAS) Air Force Marshal (ACM) Mujahid Anwar Khan stated that CENTAIC will be at the forefront of AI development in the country for both military and civilian purposes so that PAF AI can be integrated into its operational domain. It will also enable Pakistan to sign bilateral R&D initiatives with different countries.

CENTAIC enables PAF to develop sensor fusion technology, a technology that combines sensory data from multiple sources such as radar, lidar and camera into a single model with the lowest uncertainty as it balances the power of different sensors.
According to reports, CENTAIC will explore key areas of AI, including big data, machine learning, deep learning, predictive analytics and natural language processing (NLP). The creation of CENTAIC will also remove obstacles to the investigation of transmission and reception modules (TRMs) for active electronically scanned array radars (AESA).
As part of the Azm project, CENTAIC will also promote the development of the fifth generation PAF stealth jet fighters, medium-height, long-life (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). AI could be used in Project Azm for a variety of applications such as for algorithms for air-to-air and air-to-surface missile control systems, image processing for TV / IR seekers and human-machine interfaces (HMI).
According to Mujahid, advances in technology have changed the nature of warfare in the 21st century, and the vision of setting up the center was to harness the potential of artificial intelligence and its integration into the operational field of the Pakistan Air Force.
Former Air Chiefs, senior staff, and senior and retired PAF officers attended the ceremony. During the meeting, Mujahid also provided a comprehensive overview of the newly established center.
Like many countries, Pakistan is taking practical steps to accumulate IoT and AI in various initiatives. The Pakistani government has set up training programs at the national level to help young adults learn about artificial intelligence and how to use it.
