Federal Minister Aminul Haq Announces Google Scholarships Agreement, Empowering Women in Technology

In a groundbreaking development for the education and technology sectors in Pakistan, the Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Syed Aminul Haq, revealed an exciting partnership between the government and Google.

During his address at the Startups for Industries and IT Exports conference held at the prestigious Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Minister Haq shared that an agreement has been inked with Google for 45,000 scholarships, with the potential to increase to a staggering 450,000 next year.

Promoting inclusivity and gender diversity, Minister Haq emphasized that a minimum of 40 percent of these scholarships will be dedicated to empowering women in the field of technology. This initiative aims to bridge the gender gap and provide equal opportunities for talented women to pursue their aspirations in the digital landscape.

The Minister highlighted that the collaboration with Google has seen remarkable growth since its inception. Last year, Google granted 15,000 scholarships, but after thoughtful deliberation and consultations, the number has significantly increased to meet the rising demand. This partnership stands as a testament to the government's commitment to fostering a thriving ecosystem of innovation and technology in Pakistan.

Addressing the audience, Minister Haq also shared exciting news regarding the construction of a state-of-the-art gaming and animation facility at NED University. With an investment of $1.6 million, this dedicated space will play a pivotal role in nurturing and promoting the gaming and animation industry, paving the way for its exponential growth.

The conference witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including KATI Vice Patron Zubair Chhaya, Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan, Senior Vice President Nighat Awan, Chairperson of the Standing Committee Maheen Salman, Former President Saleem-Uz-zaman, Masood Naqi, Razzaq Hashim Paracha, Ehtishamuddin, experts from universities, National Incubation Centers, students, teachers, and startups, who actively participated in the event, reflecting the collective enthusiasm for Pakistan's technological advancement.

Minister Haq further highlighted the Ministry's vision for the future, extending its reach to 2050. The investments made in Pakistan's technology sector have demonstrated remarkable growth, with a leap from $75 million in 2020 to an impressive $373 million in 2021.

Furthermore, the Ministry's relentless efforts have resulted in the abolition of regulatory duties on mobile phones, effective from March 30, contributing to a more accessible and affordable mobile market for Pakistani consumers.

Drawing attention to his early endeavors as the Minister, Haq shed light on the formulation of a mobile phone manufacturing policy that kickstarted the establishment of the mobile phone manufacturing industry within months of its introduction.

Such initiatives not only boost local production but also generate employment opportunities, contributing to the country's economic growth.

Under Minister Haq's dynamic leadership, the number of incubation centers across major cities in Pakistan has grown from five to eight over the span of three years. This expansion demonstrates a clear focus on nurturing startups, promoting the gaming and animation industry, and fostering innovation at its core.

These centers provide the necessary infrastructure, mentorship, and resources for aspiring entrepreneurs to transform their ideas into successful ventures, further bolstering the technological landscape of Pakistan.

Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan, former chairman of KATI, praised the efforts of entrepreneurs and startups, highlighting their significant contributions to the industry. He emphasized the pivotal role of research and development in the IT sector and acknowledged the current wave of successful startups as the driving force behind industry innovation.

Deputy Patron of KATI, Zubair Chhaya, called for the abolition of duties on machinery and IT sector products to facilitate further expansion within the industry, propelling Pakistan's position as a leading hub for technological advancements.

Maheen Salman, in her address, emphasized the importance of curriculum alignment with industry demands. She commended the ongoing efforts to develop professional educational programs that equip students with the requisite skills needed to thrive in the current job market, ensuring a seamless transition from academia to industry.
