Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Finalizes Contingent for Asian Games 2023

The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) is gearing up for the highly anticipated Asian Games scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23, 2023.

With a contingent of 262 athletes and officials, Pakistan is set to make its mark on the international sporting stage. In this article, we delve into the details of the contingent, the challenges faced, and the prospects of success in various sports.

A Diverse Contingent

The Pakistani contingent for the Asian Games 2023 comprises a total of 262 individuals, including 137 male and 53 female athletes, alongside 72 team and contingent officials. This diverse group of individuals represents Pakistan's commitment to excellence in a wide range of sports.

A Change in Plans

Initially, Pakistan was set to compete in 25 different sports at the Asian Games. However, a recent development saw the withdrawal of the E-sport team, reducing the number of sports to 24. While the withdrawal may come as a surprise to many, it was not due to financial constraints, as is often the case.

According to an official from the POA, the E-sport team decided to withdraw after one of its members expressed an inability to participate in the Asian Games. Subsequently, they were unable to field a full team, leading to their withdrawal from the competition. This highlights the importance of teamwork and full participation in such international events.

Fencing Team's Sponsorship Woes

Another setback for Pakistan came when five athletes and two officials from the Fencing team had to withdraw from the Asian Games due to sponsorship issues. It's a reminder that financial support plays a pivotal role in enabling athletes to compete at the highest level. A

s a result, Pakistan will now be represented by only one athlete in Fencing—Mujadid Awan, who carries the hopes of the nation in this discipline.

Taekwondo's Unfortunate Turn

Najia Rasool, who was earlier named the official with the Taekwondo squad, has also been withdrawn from the contingent. This decision was made after the athlete Fatima tuz Zehra suffered an injury that ruled her out of the Asian Games. Injuries can be devastating to both athletes and their teams, often altering the course of competitions.

Notable Exclusions

Several high-profile individuals were initially part of the contingent but were subsequently withdrawn. These include Gold player Yashal Shah, Rowing official Rizwan ul Haq, Swimming official Uzma Preto, and three Hockey coaches—Rehan Butt, Ayaz Mehmood, and Saqlain.

These changes highlight the dynamic nature of sports selections and the rigorous standards that athletes and officials must meet.

The Weight of Cricket

Cricket, being a favorite sport in Pakistan, boasts the largest representation in the Asian Games with 39 players and officials participating in both men's and women's competitions. The sport carries the hopes and aspirations of millions of cricket enthusiasts across the country.

Athletics and Hockey: Promising Prospects

Athletics, with 22 players and officials participating across various disciplines, and Hockey, which has named 21 members, also showcase promising prospects for Pakistan at the Asian Games 2023. These athletes have undergone extensive training and preparation to compete at the highest level and bring glory to the nation.

Leadership in Focus

In addition to the athletes and officials, the leadership of Pakistan's contingent is of utmost importance. The POA has appointed Hamdan Nazir, the president of the Pakistan Rowing Federation and VP of Railways Sports Board, as the chef de mission of Pakistan’s contingent. Munir Ahmed has been named deputy chef de mission, ensuring that the team is led by experienced and capable individuals.

Countdown to Departure

The first batch of Pakistani athletes, including those from Sailing and Volleyball, is scheduled to arrive in Hangzhou on September 15th. This marks the beginning of Pakistan's journey in the Asian Games 2023, with the entire nation eagerly awaiting their performances.

In conclusion, Pakistan's contingent for the Asian Games 2023 is a diverse and determined group of athletes and officials. While facing challenges such as team withdrawals and sponsorship issues, they are driven by a common goal: to represent their nation with pride and achieve excellence in their respective sports. The entire nation stands behind them, hoping for a successful campaign and memorable moments on the international stage.
