Sadiq Sanjrani and Mirza Muhammad Ali Afridi won the Chairman and Deputy chairman Senate position

Sadiq Sanjrani, the candidate of the government alliance, took the oath of office from the president of the Senate after defeating the PDM's Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for the major opposition alliance in the election to the highest seat of the lower house of the Pakistani parliament.

Sanjrani got 48 votes to become Senate President, while Gillani got 42 votes in Friday's pivotal election.

Eight of the 98 votes cast were rejected, including one with a stamp on both names. The vote on the chairman is closed.

Chairman Senator Syed Muzafar Hussain Shah chaired the meeting. The first vote was taken by Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, with a total of 98 lawmakers voting.

It took place by secret ballot. The election of the Senate Vice President take placed later today.

The competition for the seat is between Mirza Muhammad Afridi from the government alliance and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri from the opposition parties.

Mirza Muhammad Afridi won the deputy Chairman of Senate by defeating his PDM Opponent Abdul Ghafor Haideri.

Afridi got the vote 54 and Ghafoor got the 44 votes, and Mirza Muhammad Afridi took oath as deputy chairman of Senate.
