Pakistan Railways Set to face crisis

Pakistan’s railway system is at a critical juncture, facing challenges that threaten its safety, efficiency, and reliability. From malfunctioning security equipment to deteriorating infrastructure and widespread encroachments, the issues demand immediate attention. This blog explores the key problems outlined in a recent National Assembly Sub-Committee meeting and offers insights into potential solutions.

The State of Pakistan’s Railway Security

Pakistan’s railway stations, apart from Lahore, lack functioning scanners and walkthrough gates, leaving them vulnerable to potential threats. These broken systems raise serious concerns about passenger safety and highlight the need for urgent upgrades.

Key Security Challenges

Non-Functional Scanners: Security at railway stations is compromised due to outdated or broken scanning equipment.

Vulnerable Infrastructure: At Quetta railway station, a crumbling wall adds to security risks.

Illegal Encroachments: Properties worth billions in Sukkur division remain unlawfully occupied, further complicating Pakistan Railways management.

Infrastructure Concerns in Pakistan Railways

Beyond security, infrastructure issues have become a ticking time bomb. Worn-out tracks and ignored side routes pose significant safety risks for both freight and passenger trains.

While main tracks require regular maintenance, the side tracks connecting Karachi to Peshawar have become increasingly unsafe due to neglect. This negligence amplifies the risk of derailments and accidents.

Encroachments Along Railway Lines

The unchecked encroachments along railway tracks create bottlenecks and pose threats to railway operations. Allegations of bribery within railway authorities have further hindered efforts to clear these illegal structures.

The sub-committee meeting stressed the need for accountability within Pakistan Railways. Here are the proposed solutions:

Regular Maintenance and Upgrades: Implement modern scanning technology and repair failing infrastructure to ensure passenger safety.

Anti-Encroachment Drives: Establish strict measures to clear illegally occupied railway properties.
