Islamabad, April 2025 – In a major relief for the people of Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a historic reduction in electricity tariffs for domestic and industrial consumers.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in Islamabad, where the premier outlined the new rates and the government's commitment to stabilizing the economy.
This reduction comes as electricity consumption in the country fell below 7,000MW during Eid-ul-Fitr, allowing the government to adjust pricing and provide relief to millions of consumers.
New Electricity Rates in Pakistan (April 2025)
The government has significantly lowered per-unit electricity costs for both households and industries:
Domestic Consumers
- Previous Rate (June 2024): Rs. 48.70 per unit
- New Rate (April 2025): Rs. 34.37 per unit
- Total Reduction: Rs. 7.41 per unit
Industrial Consumers
- Previous Rate (June 2024): Rs. 58.50 per unit
- New Rate (April 2025): Rs. 40.60 per unit
- Total Reduction: Rs. 7.59 per unit
These reductions are expected to lower household electricity bills significantly and reduce production costs for industries, potentially boosting economic growth.
Role of the Pakistan Army in Economic Stability
During his speech, PM Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the crucial role of Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and his team in stabilizing the economy.
He highlighted how civil-military collaboration has helped address economic challenges and bring much-needed financial relief to the people.
Lower Electricity Demand: Power consumption fell below 7,000MW during Eid-ul-Fitr, reducing strain on the national grid.
High electricity costs have burdened millions of households, and this reduction aims to ease their financial stress.
While announcing lower electricity rates, the government is also planning to introduce stricter regulations on solar panel installations and net-metering after the Budget 2025-26.
- Stricter approval processes for new solar installations
- Reduced benefits for net-metering (selling extra solar power back to the grid)
- Possible increase in taxes on solar panel imports
What This Means for Pakistani Consumers & Businesses
The latest electricity tariff reductions will have a significant impact on both households and businesses across Pakistan.
Lower electricity bills for residential consumers
Reduced operational costs for industries, boosting productivity
Potential relief for businesses struggling with high energy costs
Possible policy changes affecting solar energy adoption
The announcement has received mixed reactions from the public and business community. While many applaud the reduction in power rates, some are concerned about the potential restrictions on solar energy.
One Karachi-based factory owner shared:
"Lower electricity costs will help us reduce production expenses, making our products more competitive in the market.""I was planning to install solar panels, but if the government restricts net-metering, it might not be worth the investment anymore."
