Byonyks, a US-based medical device start-up in the Lahore has successfully invented Pakistan's first dialysis machine that allows patients to complete the process at home, the company said in a press release on Monday.
According to the announcement, the invention, dubbed "Robo-Kidney", would be the country's first innovation to appeal to both local and international patients with kidney failure.
The press release added, citing statistics, that more than 72 percent of Pakistani kidney patients are infected with hepatitis C infections, which spread through traditional dialysis practices.
Patients can perform bloodless dialysis at home without any supervision with protection from life-threatening infections. However, the anemic and affordable Byonyks dialysis machine has been designed with the harsh local conditions in mind.
The machine was developed in consultation with leading nephologists, medical specialists and patients in Pakistan at home and abroad. Patients with renal failure can receive dialysis treatment from the comfort of their own home, resulting in significant cost savings.
"Byonyks worked with the world's foremost experts to train a workforce in Pakistan to develop the latest medical innovations," the press release said.
"It will improve the health care and wellbeing of kidney dialysis patients, reduce the national burden of disease, improve the national economy while developing national manufacturing capabilities for the industry and export to global markets that compete as the most innovative nation in South Asia," he said.
The innovation would be available to patients and nephologists in the coming months after the legislation passed. The company also said it is enrolling the first group of patients through its website, www.byonyks.com
