Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, Chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, has officially announced that this year, Muslims across Pakistan will commence Ramadan and celebrate Eidul Fitr on the same day.
This statement came during an exclusive interview with Samaa TV, where he expressed optimism about national religious unity.
“Efforts are in full swing to ensure that fasting begins simultaneously throughout the country,” he stated. To achieve this goal, the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will convene in Peshawar for the Ramadan moon sighting.
Scientific Insights from Suparco on Moon Sighting
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has provided scientific projections regarding the moon sighting for Ramadan and Eidul Fitr in 2025:
Historically, Pakistan has witnessed variations in the beginning of Ramadan and Eid celebrations due to differences in moon sighting decisions.
- According to Suparco, the new moon will be born on February 28 at 5:45 pm, but it will be difficult to sight on the same day due to its low altitude and a mere seven-degree angular distance from the sun.
Despite these projections, the final decision regarding the official moon sighting remains with the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
Saudi Arabia’s Ramadan Start Date and Its Impact on Pakistan
This often leads to debates in Pakistan about following Saudi Arabia’s moon sighting. However, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad has reaffirmed that Pakistan will adhere to its own Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s decision while using scientific data to support traditional moon sighting methods.
Observing Ramadan and Eid on the same day across Pakistan brings several benefits:
- Strengthening National Unity: A unified observance eliminates regional and sectarian divides.
- Avoiding Confusion: Inconsistent moon sighting often leads to logistical challenges, especially for businesses, schools, and government institutions.
- Fostering Religious Solidarity: Islam emphasizes unity, and celebrating together enhances the spirit of community among Muslims.
- Economic and Social Benefits: Businesses and markets can plan better when Ramadan and Eid dates are consistent nationwide.
