Women’s empowerment and sustainable transport, the Sindh government has launched a free pink electric motorcycle scheme for female students and working women in the province.

This initiative aims to improve women’s mobility, independence, and access to economic opportunities.

A statement from the Chief Minister House confirmed that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a cabinet meeting to approve the procurement of 1,000 pink electric motorcycles for women.

The project will be funded with Rs 300 million, which will be raised outside the budget to avoid financial strain on existing government programs.

Why This Initiative Matters

With increasing urbanization, female commuters in Sindh face several challenges, including:

Limited access to safe public transport
Harassment and safety concerns in public buses
High costs of private transport options
Restricted mobility affecting education and employment opportunities

By introducing electric motorcycles for women, the government aims to:

Enhance female mobility and independence
Reduce reliance on expensive public or private transport
Encourage eco-friendly travel with low maintenance costs

The Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) will oversee the procurement and distribution of the motorcycles. To ensure fair distribution, the allocation will be conducted through an open balloting process, held in the presence of media.

Sindh’s Plan to Improve Public Transport in Karachi

Alongside this women-centric initiative, the Sindh government has also approved new projects to enhance Karachi’s transport infrastructure.

  • 15 double-decker buses that will operate on Shahrah-e-Faisal
  • 35 electric buses to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transport

The Sindh Transport Department has allocated Rs 3 billion for this project. These buses will operate on multiple routes, offering improved commuting options for all residents.

The government’s decision to introduce electric motorcycles for women aligns with global trends in sustainable urban mobility. Electric two-wheelers are becoming increasingly popular due to:

Eco-friendliness – Zero emissions contribute to cleaner air
Cost savings – Cheaper than petrol-based vehicles
Low maintenance – Fewer mechanical issues compared to traditional motorcycles
