In a decisive move to overhaul Pakistan’s taxation system, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a crucial meeting on Saturday to evaluate the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR)‘s performance.
The Prime Minister applauded the FBR for its remarkable achievement of recovering Rs. 34.5 billion on short notice, an impressive feat that has strengthened the national treasury.
Prime Minister’s Commendation for Key Officials
During the high-level discussion, Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for the collective efforts of various government departments and officials who played an instrumental role in securing the recovered funds.
- Azam Nazir Tarar – Minister for Law and Justice
- Muhammad Aurangzeb – Minister for Finance
- Ahad Khan Cheema – Minister for Economic Affairs
- Rashid Mahmood Langrial – Chairman FBR
- Senior officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)
While acknowledging the significance of the Rs. 34.5 billion recovery, Shehbaz Sharif stressed the necessity for systemic changes to sustain and enhance Pakistan’s tax collection efforts.
The Prime Minister directed the FBR to introduce capacity-building programs for its officers, equipping them with the skills required to combat tax fraud and evasion.
The Prime Minister emphasized the strict enforcement of tax regulations to prevent leakages and corruption. He reiterated that no individual or organization should be exempt from paying their fair share of taxes.
Rewarding Integrity & Punishing Corruption
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made it clear that corrupt practices within FBR will not be tolerated. He announced a zero-tolerance policy against tax officers involved in embezzlement, bribery, or misconduct.
At the same time, he urged the FBR to establish a merit-based reward system that recognizes and incentivizes officers who demonstrate exceptional performance.
Strict Disciplinary Actions – Any officer found guilty of corruption will face immediate suspension and legal proceedings.
Performance-Based Promotions – Officers who exceed tax collection targets and contribute to national revenue growth will be rewarded.
By implementing sustainable reforms, modernizing tax collection, and ensuring accountability, the government aims to create a self-sufficient economy.
