The National Highway Authority (NHA) has announced an increase in toll tax for various vehicle categories on national highways and motorways, starting July 1, 2024. This follows the approval of the Federal Budget 2024-25 by the National Assembly.
According to the NHA, the revised toll rates will apply to national highways including M-1 (Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway), M-3 (Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway), M-4 (Faisalabad-Multan Motorway), M-5 (Sukkur-Multan Motorway), M-15 (Hazara Motorway), and the Havelian-Mansehra Expressway.
The new toll rates reflect a significant increase across various vehicle categories. The toll tax on cars has risen by Rs30 to Rs40, while wagons now face an increase to Rs70. For buses, the toll has surged from Rs100 to Rs130. Two to three axle trucks will now pay Rs150 instead of the previous Rs120, and large trucks will see an increase from Rs250 to Rs350.
The Supreme Council of All Pakistan Transporters has vehemently rejected the toll tax increase, labeling it as unacceptable and harsh. They argue that the already high costs of diesel, spare parts, and tires, combined with the new toll rates, will place an unbearable financial burden on them.
