Historic Mohenjo-Daro Closed for Eid

-

The ancient ruins of Mohenjo-Daro, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will remain closed to tourists during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, as announced by Zaheeruddin Jokhio, the curator of the site.

Mohenjo-Daro, often referred to as the “Mound of the Dead”, is among the most significant archaeological sites globally, providing insight into an advanced urban civilization dating back to 2500 BCE.

Jokhio emphasized that thousands of tourists visit historical sites during national holidays, which increases the risk of erosion, vandalism, and other forms of deterioration.

Mohenjo-Daro Park and Museum

The museum offers an educational experience, displaying well-preserved artifacts such as ancient tools, pottery, jewelry, and inscriptions, providing valuable insights into the daily life, trade, and culture of the early inhabitants.

The Mohenjo-Daro Park serves as a tranquil area where visitors can relax while still appreciating the historical significance of the site.

The city featured a well-structured drainage system, organized streets, and multi-roomed houses, reflecting a sophisticated society. However, due to environmental factors, erosion, and human-induced damage, the site remains under constant threat.

Experts have warned that exposure to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and pollution can lead to the degradation of ancient bricks and structures. By implementing strict visitor controls, the authorities aim to safeguard the site from further harm.

The closure of Mohenjo-Daro during peak tourist seasons is an example of how responsible governance can contribute to heritage conservation.

Balancing Tourism and Heritage Preservation

Countries worldwide face similar challenges in balancing accessibility with conservation. UNESCO has frequently highlighted the need for protective measures to ensure that future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate these invaluable sites.

The Government of Pakistan, along with UNESCO and archaeological experts, has been working on various strategies to preserve Mohenjo-Daro. Some of the key initiatives include:

  • Restricting visitor access during high-risk periods to reduce wear and tear on the ruins.
  • Implementing controlled tourism policies, such as limiting the number of visitors per day.
  • Regular maintenance and restoration efforts using scientifically approved conservation techniques.
  • Educating visitors on the importance of preserving the site through guided tours and information sessions.
