The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced its annual examination promotion policy for 2023 for classes 1-9.
Promotion Criteria For class 1 and 2, students
For class 1 and 2, students will have annual exams like other classes, but all students will be promoted regardless of their results.
Promotion Criteria For classes 3 and 4 students
For classes 3 and 4, students must achieve a minimum pass percentage of 40% in each subject, and it is acceptable to fail one or more subjects as long as the overall percentage of failures is at least 40%. If a student fails more than two subjects, they must retake the course.
Promotion Criteria For Classes 5 to 8 students
Classes 5 to 8 students will be promoted based on their performance in certain subject categories. For example, class 5 students must pass English, Math, General Science, Urdu, Islamiyat, and Social Studies to be promoted,.
while class 8 students must pass English, Math, General Science, Urdu, Islamiat, Geography, History, Computer Science, and an elective subject.
Promotion Criteria For classes 6 and 7, students
In classes 6 and 7, students must pass each subject with a minimum score of 40%. If a student fails a subject but obtains at least 20% in the other subject, they will have an overall grade of 40% if they include the failed subject.
If a student fails two subjects in Category II but scores 20% in each, they will have an overall grade of 40% including the failed subjects. However, if a student fails more than two subjects in Category I, they must repeat the class.
For external/centralized exams in 2023, a pass percentage of 35% is required, which will be increased to 40% from 2024 onwards.
To advance to the next grade, students must meet specific criteria, such as achieving an overall grade of 40% with two failing subjects, one from each category, but securing 20% marks in each failing subject.
Promotion Criteria For class 9 students
For class 9 students, failing up to three subjects in the first annual exams will result in promotion to class 10 and the right to appear in the first annual exam in class 10. However, failing more than three subjects will result in being considered a fresh student in class 9, with their results being canceled.
