The salaries and allowances of federal cabinet members have undergone a substantial increase, with federal ministers, ministers of state, and advisers witnessing a hike of up to 188 percent.
In a move that has drawn widespread attention, federal ministers approved their salary increment through circulation, amending the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State (Allowances and Salaries) Act, 1975.
Ministers of state who previously earned Rs. 180,000 will now also receive Rs. 519,000, marking an increase of 188 percent.

Earlier this year, in January 2025, the Finance Committee approved a salary increase for MNAs and Senators, bringing their monthly earnings up to Rs. 519,000. This increment was implemented from January 1, 2025.
Due to the Finance Committee’s lack of authority to adjust their pay, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker continue to receive Rs. 218,000 per month.
To further standardize salaries across government positions, a proposal was submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recommending that the salaries and benefits of lawmakers be aligned with those of a federal secretary.
This proposal aimed at ensuring MNAs and Senators receive Rs. 519,000 per month, bringing their remuneration in line with that of high-ranking bureaucrats.
Many critics argue that such substantial raises come at a time when the national economy faces inflation, budget deficits, and fiscal challenges.

Public sector employees and common citizens have expressed frustration, arguing that government workers at lower levels struggle to receive fair compensation.
The need to bring salaries of ministers and advisers in line with international standards. The claim that higher salaries help reduce corruption and ensure financial stability for high-ranking officials.
