CM Maryam Nawaz Launches Electric Bus Service in Lahore

-

Punjab's capital, Lahore, has just taken a significant step towards greener and smarter public transport with the official launch of the electric bus service by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday.

This initiative, aimed at transforming the city’s transportation landscape, is a part of Pakistan’s broader vision to integrate sustainable and eco-friendly solutions into everyday life.

Another important feature is the availability of Wi-Fi and USB charging ports inside the buses. These additions will make daily commutes more comfortable, especially for professionals and students who rely on their mobile devices for work or study.

The integration of free Wi-Fi means that passengers can stay connected to the internet during their journeys, making the commute more productive and enjoyable.

Advanced Safety Measures for Passenger Protection

To further enhance security, the buses are fitted with CCTV cameras, providing an extra layer of protection against harassment or criminal activity. These cameras will act as a deterrent to any wrongdoers and will ensure that passengers feel safe and secure during their ride.

However, the buses can accommodate up to 80 passengers at full capacity, providing ample room during peak hours.

The buses will operate on a 21-kilometer route, running from the railway station to Green Town, passing through important areas like Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, and the PU Campus Bridge.

This strategic route will serve some of the busiest and most populated areas of Lahore, ensuring that a large number of commuters benefit from this new, sustainable transport option.

The introduction of these buses aims to alleviate congestion, improve commute times, and offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuel-based buses.

Charging Infrastructure for Electric Buses

The successful operation of the electric bus service depends heavily on the availability of efficient and reliable charging infrastructure. To meet this need, nine dedicated charging stations have been established at the Green Town Hamdard Chowk depot.

Each bus can travel 250 kilometers on a single charge, making it possible for the buses to complete up to four full routes before requiring a recharge.

A key feature of the electric bus service is the integration of digital payment systems. Passengers will have the option to pay their fares through various platforms, including digital wallets, cards, and the universal transport card.

This will not only reduce wait times but also improve the overall efficiency and experience of the public transport system. The electric buses will help reduce air pollution, ease traffic congestion, and create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city.

In preparation for this, 42 new bus shelters are currently under construction to ensure that passengers have access to safe, sheltered spaces while waiting for their buses. This move towards electric buses is more than just a transportation upgrade; it is a step towards a greener future for Lahore.
