Pakistan rejects Afghan diplomat’s accusations over migrant

-

Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan firmly dismissed the Afghan Charge d’ Affaires’ assertions regarding the mistreatment of Afghan nationals in Pakistan as “misplaced”.

The spokesperson highlighted that Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghan refugees for decades with respect and dignity, despite receiving minimal international support.

Pakistan has not only shared its resources and services, including healthcare and education, but has also facilitated a structured repatriation process to ensure Afghan nationals return safely to their home country.

Afghanistan has voiced concerns over Pakistan’s latest refugee deportation policies, alleging that Islamabad has failed to properly communicate these changes with Kabul.

It further urged Afghanistan to create conducive conditions for returning refugees so that they can integrate into their homeland smoothly.

Pakistan’s expectation is that Kabul will honor its commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights of Afghan nationals.

Pakistan Calls on UN to Fulfill Refugee Commitments

Islamabad has emphasized that the responsibility of managing Afghan refugees should not fall solely on Pakistan, which has been hosting over 2.9 million Afghan nationals.

  • Decades of Hospitality: Pakistan has hosted Afghan refugees for over four decades, offering access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
  • Ongoing Engagement with Kabul: Islamabad has maintained consistent diplomatic dialogue with Afghan authorities to ensure a smooth and coordinated repatriation.

One of the major concerns raised by human rights organizations is the status and rights of returning refugees. The real challenge lies in Afghanistan’s ability to protect and integrate these individuals into society.

The evolving refugee crisis has significant implications for Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, as well as broader regional stability.

  • Security Risks: The presence of undocumented individuals poses potential security risks, necessitating better border management and verification processes.
  • Diplomatic Strains: Afghanistan’s criticism of Pakistan’s refugee policy could lead to increased tensions between the two nations.
  • Stronger International Cooperation: The UN and global powers must take an active role in addressing refugee repatriation.
  • Enhanced Diplomatic Engagement: Pakistan and Afghanistan need to strengthen their communication channels to resolve policy misunderstandings.
